Suggested Dietary for People with Henoch-Schonlein Purpura Nephritis

A nutritive diet is beneficial for patients with Henoch-Schonlein Purpura Nephritis, and easily digestible foods are recommended. Avoid high lipid foods, sugary or greasy foods.

A person with blood in urine should avoid spicy or stimulating foods, such as chicken, seafood, pepper, chicken, mutton, beef and fish. Fresh vegetables and fruits are recommended. Cut off sodium intake because heavy sodium will elevate blood pressure and aggravate retention of fluid. Moderate amount of condiments such as sesame oil and ajinomotos may be added to the dishes.

Balancing the intake of proteins is important. Too much protein will produce excess urea so the kidneys will work harder to discharge it out. Insufficient intake of proteins will reduce immunity and easily induce infections in the patients. The volume of proteins each day is determined on the degree of proteinuria and stage of kidney disease.

The intake of water should be restricted if one has swelling. The volume of water to drink each day depends on the urine out and degree of edema. Generally speaking, the water you drink each day should be limited within 500-800ml/d. But if the patient with Henoch-Schonlein Purpura Nephritis (HSP) Nephritis doesn’t have reduced urine output and swelling, there is no need to control water.

Those in acute stage of Purpura Nephritis may need to restrict fish, egg and milk, and avoid over fullness so as to reduce burdens in gastrointestinal tract and not to induce or aggravate gastrointestinal tract bleedings. Choose refined foods and avoid foods containing rich crude fibers such as celery, rape, bamboo shoots, leeks, spinach, etc. It is better to select foods which not easily induce allergens such as carrots, cabbage, rice, rice, porridge, etc. Alcohol and cigarettes should also be avoided as they can damage gastrointestinal tract mucosa.

In addition to the above, stay warmth and prevent cold to reduce chances of getting infections. Do exercise regularly to enhance resistance to diseases. You will need to balance work with rest and avoid over fatigues to improve your health status.
